I was just following this SL63 AMG through downtown Seattle, and it looks pretty mean from behind (my potato does it no justice). So I turn off the radio and roll down the window to enjoy some V8 music, and there is none!
Even pulling away from a light, nada. This was down big city streets, there should have been angry growls bouncing off the buildings. Unsuspecting business men and women should have been spilling their Starbucks double shot low fat Carmel macchiatos in fear as it accelerated to make a yellow light.
C'mon, Merc. Just give up and make electric cars like that crazy dayglo SLS, if this is your idea of what a 577hp bi-turbo V8 roadster should sound like. What the hell are those four giant dragonable exhaust tips even doing?!?!
Get it together, AMG. The F-Type farts delicious overrun crackle in your general direction.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

Having heard them in person, they make plenty of noise. I think they might have active exhaust, and maybe he had it one, but basically all AMG V8s sing like nothing else.

Probably has some sort of active exhaust baffling like the Maserati Gran Turismo S aka the best sounding of all the cars. :)

I'm sure that's exactly what it is. But from a car length away I couldn't hear a thing over the roar of a '01 civic ex with a stock exhaust at 1500 rpm, and IMO that's just a little quieter than a car that powerful should ever be. That much power Sounding that pedestrian is dangerous, you need to be reminded that death is under your right foot. Also, the world needs V8 noise.

I've heard modern AMG V8's with loud mode on, and even at idle they sound special. I was disappointed that Merc made the active exhaust so extreme as to remove any character or volume at all from the sound. Seems like a shame.
AMGtech - now with more recalls!

That's not the turbo engine. It has the 6.3 and active exhaust. They get considerably louder when you get on them. You have to remember what kind of person buys SL's most of the time, old farts. Loud exhaust is for those damn kids! And it is still a luxury car so it needs to be comfortable most of the time. I think they did a great job giving the exhaust two personalities: comfortably mild and fire-breathing dragon.
